Adapting to new road bike

I just bought my first road bike after three years of triathlon. I’ve ridden about 12k km in the last 18 months. I just picked up a road bike for the first time this week. Went out for 150k ride today on the new bike and am really sore and went much slower (didn’t have power) than usual. How long will it take for me to get same power output / strength on the new bike that I have on the TT? Anyone else done this?

No one else has ever done this? Only thread I could find was from 2010!

Generally 3 weeks of high duration low intensity to allow adaption.
However if the fit is not optimal you may never realise your potential.

So obvious advice is, go and get a road bike fit for a road bike… And leave your TT rig mindset at the door on the way in…

Good luck finding your happy place.

You need to adjust your saddle front/back so that you are in a position that produces the most power as well as getting your knee angle correct for yourself. You can do that on a trainer with some 1 min time trials trials.

After that you need to set up the front end so that you have a hip angle that produces the most power. You may be near your tri bike hip angle, start there then move up and/or down to see what is best for you.

You will most likely be rotated back from your tri position. That position is not as aerodynamic as your tri bike so expect to go slower with the same power.

I’ve only done 2 rides (250km), but first feedback is power is down about 25% from where I usually ride at, it’s harder for me to keep my HR up and I’m sore in all new places.

I got a fit when I first got the bike and will go in again this week for some minor adjustments but it feels okay. Just no power yet

Can you be a bit more specific about changes in hip angle and how it’ll change between both bikes? I feel most comfortable when I’m in drops (similar to my tt position, but not exact) buy that’s just no power when I’m that crouched over and I tire easier.

When I’m sitting upright if I roll my hips forward I feel I have more power. Should I be working to hips forward (presume this is like TT?!) Or working to get stronger with hips back?

Appreciate the tips

Sorry it’s been a while, I’ve been riding in the Georgia Mountains for the last week.

Are you producing more power? You are going to have to quantify it, that is easily done on a trainer by using the same wheel, tension and looking at speed. Try something like 5 to 20 minute time trials if you cannot determine anything from a 1 min time trial.

It would be interesting if you are actually producing more power by rolling your hips forward or if it’s from pulling up on your aero bars.

Here is a small bit on tri bike hip angle
