just got off phone with garmin support and was told that one should not use the barfly mounts with the edge 500,etc as they are designed such that they will tend to sheer the tabs off.
i asked as they asked what mount i used on my now second sheared off tab in 3 years(supposed to not happen anymmore, but it did) i do have a barfly, but do not use it with this cpu. this is my road cpu, my other one is for TT and does use a barfly.
I’ve had the tabs break off a 500 using a 3rd party (not Barfly) mount. It worked fine for months.
The replacement 500 no longer fits. I can’t turn it to full click – at least not without using more pressure than I think any plastic will take. I think the newer tabs are bigger / hopefully stronger now. I had to get a different mount.
Speculation: with the normal 500 mount the elastics will tend to take up a lot of the shock, but Garmin now makes out-front mounts too, so the elastics can no longer take up the shock. They now have to make them stronger.

those elastics scare me.
would the 800 be different than the 500? my new Speed Concept is here and I was going to order a bar fly for my Edge 800.
…i actually found the tab, still in the standard garmin plastic mount today. when i went to get it out, found the other tab from previous one still in there as well.

I can’t imagine their policy would say that any 3rd party product is ok.
