I am feeling a serious space crunch in my house with a growing family. My “bike wall” is now a play area, so ALL my athletic toys are crammed in my workout room. I am now forced to find a new storage location for my 2 wheel toys.
The question; Will any harm come to my headset or front wheel by hanging the bike from the rafter with a hook?
IMO…if it can handle hundreds of lbs sitting on it and hitting potholes and the forces applied while turning at speed…I really think it will be o.k. to hang its own frame weight from a stationary hanger. And dont worry…I had the same question when I was trying to figure out where to put my toys too.
Half the bike stores in America store bikes this way to save space when they’re in for service–it’s ok under all normal circumstances.
The only caveat is: if you have a non-structural carbon fairing on your wheel and the manufacturer specifically advises against hanging the bike by the wheel, you shouldn’t hang it. For instance, the Bontrager Aura wheelset has a structural aluminum rim, with a thin carbon fairing for aerodynamic purposes. This fairing wasn’t designed to carry anything other than the minuscule aerodynamic loads it might encounter, which is to say: essentially no load whatsoever. You’ll know if your wheel is constructed thusly–either the rim will feel stout or it won’t. The Aura rim is squishy–you can visibly flatten it between your thumb and index finger with no effort whatsoever. HED Jets use a similar design, but I don’t know enough about the construction to say whether you should or shouldn’t hang a bike by one of these.
No problem whatsoever I have been hanging all manner of bikes this way for 30 years. Hang em!
Excellent, thank you. Not concerned about my road bike, but my tri bike is a real beast, was concerned about the weight bearing on a small surface area of my rim.

I dunno about the rim. Maybe beef up the hook with a piece of cut up towel or something so it’s a little softer on the carbon surface? I have no idea if that would do anything it just sounds good. As far as any other wear I never had any issues.
My race wheel is an S80, should be able to take the load. Thanks for your thoughts.
It takes less than a minute to swap a wheel. Since you don’t need to adjust anything to hang it on the wall, why not change the wheel instead of taking the risk of damaging an expensive wheel?
Wife races on S60s and hangs her bike by the front one. I have hung from Cosmic Carbone (fairing) and the only reason I don’t hang my bike by the Flo 90 (also fairing) is because my hook isn’t big enough. I got a bigger hook and next time the race wheels go on, the bike will hang from them.
I would use care when racking the bike, but I certainly don’t worry about the 15-25lbs of bike hanging on the hook.
I sure as hell hope not. I’ve been storing tri bikes, road bikes, commuter bikes, and MTB bikes exactly this way for almost two decades. If there’s damage to be done, I’m sure I would have done it by now.
