“Transphobia” and racism? Are these people serious? (That’s rhetorical. Of course they’re serious. They’re *super *serious.)

I think he made a pretty dumb comment, personally but I don’t get the trans connection. Obviously his show is a satire and he’s playing an idiot and it IS on a comedy channel. Having said that, if I was Asian I probably wouldn’t think it was funny. It crosses a bit of a line. I like Colbert but if I had been watching the show when he said that I’m sure I’d have rolled my eyes rather than laughed. I do agree with his point about the Redskins though. But I also don’t really care about the Redskins name issue in the first place.

So . . . racism is off limits as a target of satire, because the satire itself crosses the racist line?

I’m not saying it’s off limits, I just didn’t think it was funny. Actually, I just don’t find racism funny as a joke or not. It’s like fart humor. Doesn’t make me laugh. It’s in poor taste and makes the jokie (is that the joke teller?) look like a low brow idiot. In this case, that’s Colbert’s MO… look like an uninformed idiot. But I still think it was in poor taste. Ban Colbert for it? Hell no. If it had been an off color Jewish joke, I probably would have been very mildly offended for 2 seconds before I remembered it’s an act and it’s his character. Maybe I wouldn’t have even been offended for 2 seconds. But then again, I’m not an overly sensitive PC kinda guy.

ETA: I still don’t get the trans thing. Ding Dong? I thought that was just part of the Asian thing.

I’m not a big fan of the “I’m offended, therefore someone should lose their job” mindset. If that were to be the norm- and it’s heading in that direction- there will be very few people left with jobs.

I can’t view the clip from Navy computers, so I don’t get the accusation of “transphobia.” But from reading the transcript, it would take a true idiot to be offended by the show itself. It’s pretty clearly an example of Colbert taking something real (Snyder’s foundation), and reducing it to it’s most absurd version to demonstrate that it’s ridiculous. Not a new technique for Colbert, or other comedians throughout history.

I think the issue comes from the tweet being sent out, which didn’t allow for the context of the bit that he did on the show.

It’s also a callback “to a skit from one of the show’s first episodes, way back from the fall of 2005”
What I want to know is what is the purpose of a “hashtag activist.” This seems about as ridiculous as those weird out of context facebook statuses (the colors of your bra or where you put your purse without explanation) that’s supposed to bring attention to an illness. All light and no heat.

Short answer…people are generally too sensitive to the point of looking for something to be offended by. We’ve trained them to be this way in part because we’ve trained them to be ultra sensitive to not offending anyone. People are different, what I find funny may not be funny to you, it may even be offensive to you. That doesn’t mean that I can’t find it funny or that somehow me finding it funny is some reflection on you, your race or anything about you. Big fat dudes can look funny. Some of the best comedians are big fat dudes and part of their funny is their size. That doesn’t mean that is a reflection on all big fat dudes.

Folks seeing ‘ding dong’ and crying transphobia is funnier than Colbert’s original bit.

Are people really this dumb? Colbert made this comments not because he is racist but because has is opposed to the hypocritical and racist attitude of the Dan Snyder & the NFL.
This is a comparative piece of comedy that is meant to hold a mirror to the racist crap that Dan Snyder is doing. It is absolutely clear to anyone who is not a ‘moran’ that the Ching Chong Dingo Dong thing Colbert proposes is racist and crude. And therefore by extension the proposal by Dan Snyder idea to keep the name ‘Redskins’ but mollify people’s concerns with some sort of ‘Original Americans Foundation’ is no different other than its wrapped in prettier words.

The thing I love most about the Colbert Report is that I know a number of conservative types watch it and love it. They believe and espouse the ideas put forth by Stephen Colbert’s on air persona without realizing the show is actually making fun of the NeoCon style shows through parody and Reductio ad absurdum arguments.

Have no idea about this, except that when I saw this article 5 minutes ago on MSN…Colbert is saying that he did not make that tweet. He has his own twitter account that he uses for himself and his show. Comedy Central is saying that they own and use the twitter account that this offending tweet was made on. Furthermore they are saying that this twitter account is not associated with Colbert or his show (except that it uses his name).

I think you guys are much too easily offended by other people’s hypersensitivity. You need to develop a thicker skin.

I would call the joke teller the joker and the person who the joke is on the jokee.

I’m not offended by their hypersensitivity. I’m saddened by the cultural illiteracy it demonstrates, and how widespread it appears to be.

I am too. My post was intended to be humorous.

I remember Kevin Smith taking some heat years ago for his homophobic character Banky in Chasing Amy. He has since won over the gay audience, but I remember him trying to explain to the person asking the question, “Don’t you get the point? The homophobic guy is portrayed as the unreasonable idiot.”

the level of butt hurtness in society today is off the charts. pretty much guaranteed no matter what is said…someone somewhere will get their undies in a wad. coupled with the dispersion of info via the innerwebs and we have daily outrage for all!

We are talking about a show that put glasses on a ham and called it “Ham Rove” and then had a conference room dedicated in its honor (and Karl Rove was interviewed about it!!). Anybody who takes this show seriously needs to lighten up.

Oh, internet. So promising in the world of science and education, but most of the time just used for angry/uninformed tirades, cat videos, passive-aggressive Facebook statuses, and “if I get 10,000 likes, my dad will quit beating me” posts. Sigh.

No, but it wasn’t ironic or funny either.
