Covers: Why not front, too?

I was just reading a thread where someone asked if they should rent 404’s for their tri. Occurred to me that renting 404’s might cost more than a rear disc cover from wheelbuilder or the like.

This brought up the next logical question: anyone building fairings for the front wheels, to turn a ksyrium or Open Pro, or whatever into a Flo 60?

There was a post about such a project years ago. The finished product looked really nice, but it was way beyond my tinkering skills.

As a DIY project it’s not hard to make one that works well. However at least for me it’s
hard to make one that looks good.

J-Disc made a permanent cover for box rims back in the mid-90s (followed by the HED Jet, Flow, etc.)

The issue has always been how to make one that is non-permanent (easily to install/remove).

I have one of those. I may put in on my KHS and wear my Speedo at a some races this summer.

I’ve been toying with the idea of this project myself. I do not have ANY carbon fiber experience, but I do have decent fiberglass experience. I will likely try a fiberglass aero cover before trying carbon. It’s on the back burner of projects at the moment behind many household ones.

I’d forgot about that. What’s the shelf-life on that stuff?

Has anyone? This is Slowtwitch – of course they have. Start here:

now adays with 3d printing being cheaply available one could easily build fancy molds to get that firecrest shape, if one so desired. I don’t really see why it needs to be removable fwiw.

I do have access to 3rd printing but the size is limited to 6" by 6". I would likely make my on mold. I think it would be a decent option to have it be removable however making this work with different spoke patterns would be tricky. Either way that is a concern. Which is why IF I were to do this I would likely be making a one off which would be for the sake of making something for fun rather than production.
Idle hands…

Everyone with an internet connection, CAD software, and a mailing address has access to 3d printing. Anyway, you’d have to make the mold snap together as most have a limited build envelope. I’m sure you have the experience to make something work if you’re keen to do it one way or another. I suppose that volume of part could be costly though.

You also need different slotting for different spoke counts and cross patterns (makes it hard to provide a 1-size-fits-all).

I think it was about 4…wait for it…ever ;P.

It’s actually making a comeback and you can find it back in stores and online: http://www.amazon.com/Zinka-Colored-Waterproof-Sunblock/dp/B007RS0JB8
