Crowie...my recollections of him as an Ironman

With Alexander’s comments this weekend about bowing out of the full Ironman distance events I say “well earned”. Classy competitor but even a classier person

My one Ironman face to face encounter, with him, was in Kona 2009. He’d won the race and was collecting his gear in the transition area. I’d finished(poorly) but was with my family as we were walking out.
I congratulated him and he immediately stepped closer and congratulated me on my finish and introduced himself to my wife and kids as warmly as anyone ever could.

We chatted a few minutes and I asked about how he would celebrate and he quickly said " time off with the family".
Long live Crowie…

Agreed. A few years back at Racine I was out running along the course. It was the year he just turned it in as he was having an off day. I was with a group, and Crowie knew one of the guys I was with. He was just chatting it up and having a good time, even got to hang out with him for a little while after the race. Super nice, down to earth guy.

Sounds like a lot of other pros could take a few lessons in how to engage with AG athletes (fans) at events.

I had a very pleasant experience meeting him in St Croix in 2008. He was staying at the same hotel as me and he could not have been nicer to the fans and the staff. He stopped to pose with anyone who asked and I recall him jumping up to pose with one of the staff members working the omelet bar that remembered him from the year before and was very excited to see him again.

I chatted with him and his wife briefly at a meet and greet at the hotel after the race. I recall him being very excited because it was his daughter Lucy’s 3rd birthday weekend. I wish I asked for a picture with him. Class act and damn he is a good looking man.

I also met him at St Croix 2008. It was my first half and I spoke to him at the party at the Divi that evening. My friend also raced that day and had a rough time with the heat. He told Crowie his time, which was north of 7 hours and Crowie just smiled and said, “well, at least you got your money’s worth mate.”

My wife just stared at him the whole weekend.

“Crowie… making triathlon a spectator sport for iron-widows everywhere since 2006”.
