Cycling Gilet/Vest- Whats best?

Hi all,

Well my Gilet fell out of the back pocket this morning while riding. Went back to try and look for it but no such luck. So I’m up for a new one. I was using the DHB Windproof Ultralight Gilet, but thought that it wasn’t very effective. Anyone have any suggestions on a good gilet? Happy to spend a few extra $$ on one that’s a bit more effective and want to wear more often.

Cheers Alex

I have a Gore vest with windstopper that I really like. It has a mesh back though so it’s really for keeping you warm (very effectively IMO) by blocking wind only and not for retaining heat or repelling water. I like the look of the Rapha Gilet but haven’t tried it.

I’ll probably get flamed for being a dentist, but I’m a huge fan of the Rapha one. I have it in white. Wife has it in black. I also run in when it is drizzling.

Castelli Gabba jersey is good. So is the Assos Falkenzahn.

What do you mean by “effective?” Windproof? Waterproof? Warm? All of the above?

Keeps the wind of the chest and keeps you warm. Water resistance isn’t much ofan Iissue as where I live in Australia we don’t get a whole heap of rain through winter

I have the Louis Garneau Course Speedzone vest, and it’s pretty great. I also have an LG Superlite vest for days that I think will warm up so I can stuff it in a jersey pocket in the middle of a ride or for descents on the local hill. Of course, I live in Hawaii, so it’s never really all that cold here. In our nastiest conditions I never really need more than a good vest. Both vests are relatively aero and breathe pretty well.

The Castelli Fawesome vest looks really good, too.

I have a castelli fawesome for chilly rides (irregardless of whether it rains or not) the goretex windproof on the front keeps the chill out on descents. pair it with nanoflex armwarmers/knee/leg warmers you’re good to go unless you live in some ridiculous winter town.

in spring i’ve found champ-sys makes a very nice wind blocking and packable vest, but my favorite by far is the Castelli Leggero Vest - super light and packs into a size about a hockey puck with it’s own bag included. no fuss. no overheating.

How packable is the Fawesome? Will it fit in a back pocket or is it more suited to all ride wearing?

Yeah not really packable unless you want to look like the hunchback of nortre dame…

But its really for all day riding. I have a very high sweat rate. Like stupid high. But I find it quite comfortable up to about 24-25 C its made that well. Its not like wearing a plastic bag. Totally f’ing awesome. Thus, the fawesome.

You won’t regret.

Morning bump here in Auatralia so any other suggestions?

I bought a CAPO vest just over a year ago an it’s one of my favorite pieces of cycling clothing. Thick enough to provide some warmth, thin enough to stow away in a jersey pocket. Keeps you dry enough in the rain. I liked it so much I bought a second in a different color and if I found another in a different color…I’d buy a 3rd.

I also really like my Castelli Fawsome. Really blocks the wind and cold well. Packability wise, it’ll fit in a Jersey pocket pretty easily.

Panache, best vest ever, three pockets, packable, does not flap in the wind.
