Drafting at 77mph

Pretty unreal if this guy really is going that fast.

Big deal. It’s a big long steep downhill. I’ve done 58mph in the aerobars solo before. 77mph behind a semi with a ground hugging van trailer is very possible, but too risky for my taste. In the video it dint; seem like they were going that fast. More like mid 50’s.

I’m also not convinced that it isn’t more like 89kph… the number displayed on top of his computer. I can’t clearly read 124.

Seriously… I hit 54 on a descent at Lake Stevens 70.3 in aero without a truck (one advantage of being a bigger guy I guess).

My guess is this guy will try and top it and end up under a bus at some point. Darwin awards weren’t made for smart people.

Big deal. I have gone 31mph head and shoulder first into the cement…

Not impressed by the speed. More impressed with the fact that they got the camera to stay on the truck and the bunny hops. I liked the bunny hops.

Davis Phinney used to do it all the time in Colorado. I’ve been at 60+ coming down some of the mountain pass roads around Gunnison, never drafted a semi though. Hairy, but I was younger and dumber then.

At IMLT, coming down Brockway, the fastest I could go was 49.8 mph no matter what I did. Guess my 127 lbs just didn’t want to go any faster. I’m sure the extra clothes I had to wear didn’t help either.

How fast do you think that kid went when he was drafting off a big rig in the movie “Breaking Away”? Didn’t the driver get a speeding ticket?

Looks like right around 60.

The cable routing… Oh, The Humanity!!

I’m too damn old for that. But, just like my dog, who has a puppy trapped in an old girl’s body, I still want to!

Best line in Top Gun? I feel the need, the need for speed!

I wonder which one got the KOM
.

I dont think I will ever be able to or want to go faster than the 44 mph I did one time, but in the interest of looking like a bad ass like the rest of the posters, I will say I am unimpressed.

77mph is crazy, but I think the unofficial record is like 100+mph done behind a truck on salt flats somewhere. It’s unofficial because it’s so meaningless with a big draft that nobody has bothered to make a certifiable record.

I was over 50 mph yesterday and there is no way I could pedal effectively at that speed. Since they are pedaling and they don’t have a massive chainring it looks like they are closer to 45mph than 77mph

120 rpm in a 53X11 is 45 mph. 130 rpm is 49 mph

Big deal. I have gone 31mph head and shoulder first into the cement…Ouch! Should that maybe have been posted in pink font as that’s not something you typically brag about?

Actually it is an official record. Fred Rompelberg went 167mph in 1995 paced behind a a drag car on the salt flats.

My fastest ‘clean’ run was 97kph on a sweeping downhill with a howling tailwind. It was super rough and scared the crap out of me, but it was fun at the same time.

I used to ride along the Auckland waterfront with buddies a few years ago, before work. At Mission Bay, buses would pull out from the lights and not accellerate too hard, because of an upcoming corner. If you could time it just right, you could ‘catch the bus’ and draft all the way to the city (about 7km). I got quite good at ‘taking the bus’ but it takes skill, balls and even a little bit of smarts.

  1. Know the course (and where the bus stops are). There are several tight turns on Tamaki Drive and if you don’t know them and drop a knee, you could swing into opposing traffic quite easity!
  2. Keep towards the middle of the road, so when the bus ducks into the bus stop, you get clean air and don’t slam into the back of the bus.
  3. FEEL the air. If you’re too close, the air is actually going UP the back of the bus. If your front wheel is about 2-3m behind the bus, the air is actually moving forward. (it’s weird doing 65kph behind a bus, on the brakes half the time, so you don’t get sucked into the bus.
  4. Get off your bike in town, and wait for your buddies to catch up. Better still if you can nip into the cafe and have a coffee in your hand when they show up, as they are panting and covered in sweat

My best ever on the waterfront was to average 65kph in a 50kph zone! and I made 8 minutes on my buddies, in just a 7km journey! Great entertainment.

Another time I drafted to 80kph behind a truck going downhill, and then drafted all the way to the top of the uphill on the other side of the valley, and was doing 59kph uphill at the top. The look of amazement on the pedestrians faces was priceless!
