Everest 2014

Anyone following the Everest expeditions this year? I sure am!

I am following a couple blogs, but looking for some climbers that maybe posting their experiences online.
Anyone know of anyone blogging from the mountain?

Thanks!

I start paying more attention once we get closer to summit season in May. Please post if you find any good blogs that are worth following.

A co worker of mine will arrive at base camp mid April. Discovery channel will be there for a month shooting footage. I guess some guy has decided to be the first to jump off in some wing suit. This will air on live tv. Not sure if it is live or live to tape. I would guess live to tape, pretty sure airing a death is frowned upon.

i was wondering about this… about 10 or more years ago, i saw a documentary on PBS about some guys that brought hang gliders to Katmandu and wanted to glide off the mountains. They dropped like rocks. Wish i could see that again (i googled it, but couldn’t find it).

What are the odds this year that a socialite holds up a group because of a selfie or a tweet and that result is a few deaths?

Yes, that’s Joby Ogwyn. That will definitely be interesting to watch.

You know I love seeing those dead bodies. Always interesting in seeing new ones.

What could possibly go wrong?

I’m wondering when they will simply install an escalator and have a photographer stationed at the top. To me, climbing Everest has lost it’s lusture now that anyone with about $35k for a team or $60k by yourself is doing it.

Uh, is there enough air up there for that to work?

He was on the Tonight Show this week and said Discovery Channel would be showing it. He also said he would be probably hitting 200 mph! Fallon said, “INSANE!” I agree.

Did you read that Nepal has new trash removal rules? Each climber has to carry out 18lbs of trash excluding their own oxygen tanks and poop.

I’m looking foward to following this season and I hope they do the series again. I loved that show.

Hopefully this will eventually become the world’s last all about me extreme sport that money can buy.

+2. It’s basically a Disneyland ride, only you can die easier.

Here’s the vaunted technical piece. The Hillary Step. The only thing that makes that “technical” these days is not getting gear tangled up navigating all the traffic.

I’d be far more interested following more technical climbs by real mountaineers.

Climbing Everest may have become a zoo. But, it’s still a seriously hard undertaking. It may not be technically all that hard. But, it’s still a long time to be up high subject to the elements. I see people on this site who fuss about doing a one-day race in Boulder at 5300.’ They should try living above 20,000’. It’s not like people are using oxygen the whole time.

This is true. The first couple of times above 16K I had zero problems, so I took it for granted. Which was a mistake. Big trouble on the third time.
