A nearby LBS has a 2011 nosecone shiv module at 60% off. I need a large & was told it was a large but after checking the stack & reach stickers… it’s a small.
I have lusted after this frame and my wife approved the purchase.
Any suggestions on the most efficient way to search other than to start calling Specialized shops and cross them off the list?
OR forget about the Shiv and go after a new Speed Concept 7.5
That seems like a pretty big mistake for a shop to make. What was the reach number?
I got a NOS module in the fall of 2012 off eBay for ~$2600. Screaming deal. It had been built up, but never ridden. So you may wanna troll eBay and see if anything comes up.
Fair warning - if you wanna travel with the bike, it is a PITA to break down and rebuild on location. I have taken it with me the last 2 years to Spring Break but doubt I will do it again next year.
I bought one on EBay that had been ridden so little the chain rings looked new. There seems to have been quite a few of these that were bought and essentially never ridden. My guess is the lack of adjustment on the handlebars made them uncomfortable for the average rider. You might be better off with the SC if the stock bars on the Shiv differ much from your current set-up. You can modify the nosecone Shiv for more adjustability, but it is a DIY project and the spare parts aren’t always available from Specialized. My spacers were a 6-month back order and I ended up having custom extension made.
It seem that last years going price was about 2,500$. A teammate also got one that was very clean for 2500$. There are some partial non-nosecone modules out there that a very cheap, but I think those are the old HTC frames and you will be on you own for base bars and other hardware that could be hard to acquire.
There are now stock extension brackets that lets you run the extension of your choice. They are like $30 for the pair and I am now running TriRig extensions. The Specialized s-bend extensions were killing my wrist…and I normally like s-bends.
There is a thread on ST somewhere with the part #.
I have a large here that I would be willing to part with for that plus shipping. Was built up on the floor but is now just back to the module and hanging on the wall. PM if interested.
The Shiv runs big.
Most guys I know who are around 6’0 run a small.
That is unless you ride really far forward on the bike.
Shiv is same stack in all sizes (s-xl), so it is pretty easy to size down if you don’t need the length.

Not necessarily…I’m 5’9" and ride a large. But I use the forward facing SP. Tip of my saddle is about even with the BB, though.
Even with bb=forward.
At 5’9 do you have any seatpost coming out of that thing? Or just tape the saddle to the toptube?
??? You just said that the bike has the same stack for all sizes, right? It has a flat top tube from the front to the back of the bike, so it wouldn’t matter what size I was on in relation to how much seatpost I have sticking out. It would be the same for all sizes.
But yes, I have plenty of SP showing.
And I agree that the seat position is forward…any saddle position with that SP will be forward. But I don’t have it jammed forward all the way on the rails in some crazy-ass position. It sits in the middle of the rails and the tip is even with the BB.
Actually the XS tt shiv is smaller- it is the small-xl that has the same stack.
I guess when I am saying the bike runs big, that applies more to a UCI tt application where the seat is even further back in most cases and aerobar extension is limited.
But we weren’t talking about an XS…my point remains- it wouldn’t matter what size frame I was on (S, M, L, or XL), I would have the same amount of SP showing.
Yeah, the bike CAN be very long, if you want it to be…but it doesn’t have to be. For reference, my previous bike was a 54 P2 w/ a slammed -25* 90mm (maybe it was 100mm, can’t recall). My Shiv has the exact same saddle/ pad positions.
Do any of you have a pic or could direct me to a picture of what a nosecone shiv looks like in full ironman trim? I know it’s great unladen for TT’s & shorter distance tri’s but am questioning if it’s the right way to go for longer distances and the cargo that comes along for the ride.
Size wise I’m 6’2", ride a 58cm road bike & 57cm P3AL slammed with a 100mm stem and an adamo in the middle of the forward facing SP position.

Well, yeah but it looks like macca didn’t carry ANYTHING. I’ve looked at Jordan’s set-up but it’s still pretty spartan. I’m not sure if he carried a first endurance concoction in the aero frame bottle.
