Georgia - WTF...another gun thread

This will make Forge/JSA happy but I figure homicide/gun rates in this state are just about ready to esculate. WTF.

You don’t think people carry in those places already? Ok …

I have always said the owner of an establishment should be able to decide whether to permit firearms. That is what the bill does. What are your issues?

From your link –

Here are some of the key changes in the omnibus bill:
It will no longer be illegal to bring a firearm to a place of worship, as long as the congregation says it’s allowed. If someone is caught with a firearm in a church that bans guns there will be a $100 fine.School districts will be allowed to decide if staff can carry firearms in elementary and high schools. Firearms still won’t be legal on college campuses but the penalty for licence holders is dropped to $100.Licensed carriers will be able to bring firearms into bars unless the owner disallows it. Someone who doesn’t co-operate with a no-gun rule could be charged with trespassing on private property.No more bans on firearms in public housing.Firearms can be carried in non-secure areas of airports. A person with a gun caught in a secure area will simply be asked to leave, without risk of arrest, jail or a fine.Police won’t be able to stop people to ask to see a carry permit.No database allowed of concealed carry permit holders.

Does that run afoul of the federal GFSZA?

EDIT: Never mind. I see the GFSZA allows states and schools to grant exceptions.

The Gun Free School Zones Act of 1990 (18 U.S.C. § 922(q)) states:

(A) It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.

(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm

(i) on private property not part of school grounds;

***(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located *or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license;

Although the Federal GFSZA does provide an exception for an individual licensed to carry a firearm, this exception only applies in the State that physically issued the permit. All fifty States have provisions to issue concealed carry permits to citizens. Most of these States also enter into reciprocity agreements with other States where each State agrees to recognize the other’s concealed carry permits. Because the Federal GFSZA requires the permit be issued by the State which the school zone is in, it is difficult for a permit holder to travel outside their State of issuance to a reciprocating State without violating the Federal GFSZA

People who have concealed carry permits are, by definition, law abiding citizens, probably about the most law abiding in the country. Why would allowing them to carry concealed in churches, bars (still illegal to carry concealed if you’re drinking), schools, etc, suddenly cause the homicide/gun rates to escalate???

You’re really gonna have to defend that statement.

Yah. It looks like school staff won’t even need a license under GFSZA as part iv provides an exception for “an individual for use in a program approved by a school in the school zone”.

Where do you worship?

Now? Primarily (nearly exclusively) on my own. Occasionally, with my mentor from the nearby Buddhist temple. No, I never carry when I visit him. Remember, I am a recovering Catholic. You don’t think Catholics are packing in church? That’s cute!

Let’s just check the stats in Georgia over the next few years. I’ll bet gun homicides are going up. Any takers?

Sure. Let’s keep an eye on concealed weapon permit holders murder rate. I bet you will see what you see everywhere else. Nothing.

Seems like you are unable to form a coherent argument to support your theory. This is obviously an emotional issue for you. Don’t hesitate to get hysterical over nothing.

" You don’t think Catholics are packing in church? "

Not here in Canada unless they’re Italian mafia. :slight_smile: But then the last time I went to RC church was about a zillion years ago.

Seriously - packing to go to church?

Sure. What are the stakes?

Check out this chart. California and New York have some of the lowest gun owner % rates in the country, yet they lead the nation in gun homicides. Criminals and killers don’t follow the law anyway. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/health/interactives/guns/ownership.html

Most people who conceal carry do it daily. It isn’t a matter of packing to go to church. It is a matter of packing when you leave the house. No different than putting on a coat or a pair of shoes every time you leave the house.

And the the USA is #1 in the western world in % gun homicide rates and also % gun ownership rates. But I guess there is no correlation.

What is it about your society that you are so paranoid that you feel that you have to carry a gun every time you leave the house?

Here in Idaho you can carry in bars, churches, public housing, etc. I’m lucky to be alive.

It’s got nothing to do with paranoia.

And, now college campuses:

And if I walked into a bar in Boise and expressed my anti gun opinions I probably wouldn’t be.
