Imagine a heads up display for a bike... kinda

What do you guys think of a device/ mount that hooks up to your bike and iphone. You turn your iphone on to a video app that when sitting in this dock/cradle you can be looking down and see what’s in front of you. It’s a thought I have been having for a while now and have wanted to make it.
I feel it would add one more comfort level to cyclists, especially when “suffering”.
You wont need to look up.

Not sure what those glasses are… Kinda look like a recording device.
I’m trying to describe looking down at your phone that is showing a screen of what’s in front of you.
Kinda how Military tanks see.

Don’t need to imagine. I tried one of those. It is marginally more convenient than looking down at a Garmin on my wrist or bike computer on the handlebars. It is significantly less useful for tris than the Garmin because I can’t swim or run with it.

So pretty much a wash. I’d use one if I got one for free. Would not spend money on one.

You’ve seen such a product?

Wait what? You want a periscope? Or a camera/display screen? To see what’s in front? WHY?

$100 says you’d crash with a setup like that. Field of view and depth perception would suck.
Edit: as opposed to all of those civilian tanks?

Integrate turn-by-turn directions, and I think you’d have a winner.

Yeah the 4iiis thing that has been around a while. Plus he posted a pic of it above…

LOL
I guess I figured that cyclists look down regardless.
Weather to look at their computers, or just to endure the suffering.
What if while they were looking down they saw up.
I think that may be safer…?

I may actually get Google Glass if I could see speed, power, HR, etc on it. That’d be great if it could integrate with Garmin.

Oh, wait… So I guess I didn’t understand what was being discussed from the OP. So this is something that allows you to see up the road when looking down?

We tried that in the late 80’s-early 90’s… Two mirrors mounted to the stem. I think it showed up in Triathlete magazine for maybe 3 months, and then disappeared. I can’t imagine any one actually riding that way.

Well, actually, let me back up. Yes, I can. Given some of the threads here, I can see some one actually trying that.

LOL yeah someone will try it.

I always thought that a little periscope mounted inside swim goggles could be useful for sighting… Still need to lift your head a little just not as much. Never tried it myself.

In the second post…there is a pic of the view speed glasses.
That triangular bit of glass on the left lens is a mirror that lets you see ahead while looking down. It is made by viewspeed.

Hello dforelich and All,

Thanks for mentioning View-Speed.

View-Speed Cyclops Glasses are an aid for keeping the top of the cyclist’s head down more even with the plane of the back of the cyclist … while providing the ability to see forward for safety - to improve comfort and relax the neck muscles with the head in a more normal position which mitigates the effects of Shermer’s Neck Syndrome - and to increase speed about +1 mph Faster at same power depending on cyclist’s previous position.

Click here to see a chart of time saved with View-Speed products.

The View-Speed Cyclops Glasses work quite well providing forward vision with a prism which provides a forward view with no single plane mirror reversal … i.e. you see the same world view as with the naked eye. When using the View-Speed Cyclops Glasses you can just lift your head a bit and see over the prism with normal vision … also it is easy to read your performance display device while wearing the glasses.

Cheers,

Neal

+1 mph Faster

The first picture I posted was the Recon Jet, a HUD for cycling, etc. I don’t think it’s currently capable of streaming a forward-looking video. I know exactly what you’re looking for, but you’re really just creating a product need that isn’t truthfully there. I’m not saying there wouldn’t be a demand–it’d be cool as hell and I’d buy one if I had the dough–just that there isn’t truthfully a need.

Pro tip: follow the white line. It won’t lead you astray.
