15 hours. Enough/Not Enough/Enough
Yeah about 16/17 hours - swimming 10K meters per week biking 150+ miles and running 25-30. did Galveston this weekend.

As long as you have been logging 4-6 hours per week of running on average and 2-4 hours of swimming the biking will come quickly (1-2 hours of riding in winter is probably enough). You can’t fake the other two sports that well (well you can with a wetsuit, but lack of swim fitness will show up late in the run of an Ironman unless you take it super easy on the swim which most people do not). I am not advocating being light on riding all year, just in the winter. It is a sport you can ramp quickly and make big gains if your aerobic engine is already large from swim+run.
I know a lot of the conventional ST wisdom is that swimming is not good ROI time and to some degree I can agree with that, but when I look at the top Ironman athletes, most of them have a strong swimming background much more so than a pure running background. Cycling requires almost no motor skill (I can attest to that, because I lack a lot of coordination in my left leg due to an accident 3 years ago, and my run speed is down 8-10% yet my bike FTP is identical), so it is easy to pick back up. The other sports require more year round attention.
longest week - about 24 hours but 18-19 of that was x-c ski-ing
swimming three times/week pretty consistently
biking 2-3 hours/week, still indoors
running 3-5 hours/week
.
Highest volume week so far has been 16 hours, approximate breakdown as follows: 6+ hours on the bike, 4 hours running, 3 hours swimming, and 3 hours strength training, including non-weight core work. Plan to taper the strength work as I continue to increase run/bike/swim time. Distances are approximately 30 mi. running, 100 mi. biking (all still on the trainer!), and 8000+ yards swimming.
I hope you’re all training to swim around icebergs!
Yeah, still frozen up there. I took this picture this past weekend.
Yes, bring your booties!
3 X 19 hour weeks, but I just did IM Los Cabos 10 days ago.
