Ironman Cozumel (8)

I am participating in Ironman Cozumel this year I am just wondering about travel to Cozumel from Cancun? Getting a bike threw Mexican customs how much time should be aloud when booking flight to get to the island that day??

Done Coz 4x, and will be back in 2014 for 5th time. Also did Cancun 70.3 3x. I suggest you take a full day to get from Cancun to Coz if you’re flying. I have driven from Can to Playa Del Carmen, then ferry over to Coz 3x. It works fine, but if you have to fly into Cancun, then just make sure you have a full day of travel set aside to get from Cancun to Coz, as it can be hectic. Once in Mexico, you should have no problems going from place to place. If possible, I suggest re-directing your flight into Cozumel for simple ease of travel.

Mexico has customs?

what do you recommend for transportation on race day for spectators? Are all the roads blocked off to vehicles? The Ironman site is a little confusing to street closures.

Depends where you are staying. Most of the hotels are walking distance to the finish line, but for those hotels a bit farther away, a moped works well. There are quite a few taxis as well if the moped isnt an option. I wouldnt recommend renting a car as its not really needed, but some might find it helpful.

Taxis all over the place. I’ve been there for two races (not racing diving and volunteering ) and never had any issues getting around. I would never… Ever… Rent a moped in cozumel. Way too dangerous (just do some searching)

Cheapest car rental is Isis off the main square. Cheap with insurance included

it wasn’t too bad for me last year when I flew into cancun.

Got bags, went out to shuttle to playa del carmen. Hoped on next fairy to cancun.

I think I got in at 2 and was in hotel by 7. But that could be longer depending on timing of the ADO bus and fairy schedule. Wasn’t worth the extra $$$ for me to fly directly into cancun

Thanks that’s exactly what we are looking at. Flying into Cancun, taking the ADO bus to the fairy at Playa del Carmen, and fairy across to Cozumel. Looks like we are on the right track. Thanks for the information.

I found that to be the cheapest. Plus the ADO bus was dark and I napped… double plus

Just be warned there is a ~.25 mile walk w/ luggage from the bus drop off to the ferry terminal

Careful on a moped there. Crazy traffic patterns and drunk tourists. I’d walk or cab everything. Cabs are ubiquitous. I preferred being North of San Miguel rather than South. Just my opinion though, I know there are nice places South too.

If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, have you considered flying straight into Cozumel? That’s what I did for IMCOZ and it made things much easier for me than flying into Cancun & taking the ferry.

Where I am flying out of the flights to Cozumel are very expensive and has 4 lay overs and is 2 days travel so that isn’t even an option.

Where are you staying? We rented a condo at El Cantil (literally right AT the finish line) last year and all our supporters had no issues getting around on race day. There was a shuttle bus that brought folks back from the swim start to the finish line area so you don’t need a taxi for that really. We rented a car for one day to scope out the bike course. We called it the Banjo del Gato because it well….it was. I would advise against a moped. Things are so easy to get to and really these isn’t much outside of the 5 city blocks along the waterfront you will need to get to.

Taxi’s are cheap, easy to find and the guys at El Cantil would flag down ones for us or have one waiting for our big group when we needed it.

And we used TriBike Transport for our bikes so we had no worries about transportation or customs.

Hope that helps.

How do you like this race overall? I’ve never done a full, but that would be a cool first.

i think it would be an excellent first IM. as MC mike lovato said during the race briefing, it’s a kind race.
i agree with the others: there are many options for staying in town, and it’s very easy to get around there. two huge department stores
right in town, both with big grocery sections.
i thought it a great race and enjoyed it very much.
