Moving to San Francisco (1)

My wife and I are moving to San Francisco in the summer.

Wondering if there are good groups to train/swim with.
Where do they leave from?
Where is a good place to look at to live on a short term basis?

Welcome!

I think there are some good groups in the city. I like “the valley” for training since the weather is mild (Mediterranean climate) and lots of terrain choices. You really can train year round. Silicon Valley Tri Club is a large club with good group workouts.

There are tons of groups there to train with for SBR or just pure Swimming, Running, Riding. Spend some time checking out groups there like Golden Gate Tri Club/Oakland Tri Club, Nike Run Club, and those group that swim aquatic park weekly. Enjoy your new location, it’s nice out there.

People have mentioned the groups to train with. The more important question is where to llive in the city. These are gross generalizations but have a grain of truth in the characterizations:
Sunset: do you want to see the sun? then don’t live here. Has the worst weather of the city. It will literally be 30 degrees colder and cloudy when the rest of the bay area is warm and sunny. Great food scene though and running through the GG park is a great morning workout.
Marina: are you a frat boy or girl? otherwise move on
Noe: are you a DINK or still think you are a DINK? otherwise move on
Mission: are you a tech hipster? otherwsie move on
Portrero Hill: cool views and relatively good deals in buying real estate…that’s if you think 900-1000/foot is your idea of a good deal…and it is if you live here
SOMA: do you like lofts?

Not sure how old you are: if you are older and have somewhat given up the idea of living the city life but still want to be close to the city, move to hillsborogh or burlingame.

If you’ve completely given up on any pretense that you are young and cool, move further down…check out palo alto area.

Or you can move to Oakland and save loads of money. In the right part of town, it is cheaper and safer. In the wrong part of town, well, good luck. But that is true in any city. Some groups have already been mentioned. You can also check out the local track (Depends on where you live obviously)-there are group workouts at most that run in the morning/evening.

I love swimming at the Burlingame (sp?) Aquatic Center when I fly through SFO. They have limited open swim times but the pool is amazing.

There are tons. I’m a bit south of SF, but I know for sure tons of triathletes are in SF. You’ll find them quickly if you look.

The cost of housing is the real killer - if it weren’t for that, everyone and their brother would move to SF.

My wife and I are DINK’s.

Both around 30. She is here for 6 months for a fellowship at the UCSF hospital. I will be there and back in Canada for work. We are hoping ideally for place close to the hospital. But also have a house to pay for back in canada so we don’t want to spend a mint.—

I think NOPA may fit the bill for you guys. Good food/drink scene. Right by the park for running. Close to the hospital. And not the MOST expensive place to live in the city.

For pure training purposes though, the Marina is the spot. Aquatic park is great for swimming. Good running along the water in in the Presidio. And amazing rides in Marin right across the bridge.

My wife and I lived there before we got old and moved down the Peninsula (last year).

Yes, there are fratty people, but at least they are pretty. If the bar scene isn’t your thing, just stay away from Chestnut/Union after 11pm.

Thanks we aren’t really fratty at all. But we do like good food.

So we will take a look.

Thanks.

NOPA would be ideal or if you get close enough to USF you can get into the Koret center for their neighborhood program and have an amazing amazing best pool in the Bay Area swim close by for $5 a swim if you go with the Gold Pass or whatever it’s called. Plus you’d be close to Golden Gate for running and then Arguello to Presido to bridge to Marin for riding.

love it.

no notes on Russian Hill living?

to the OP–try the Olympic Club.

NOPA or Sunset.

Trying to commute to UCSF is a nightmare if you don’t live close, and I can guarantee you they won’t have parking for her.

Rents are generally insane (more than Manhattan now), so Sunset might be the least egregious option.

There are so many single and multisport groups, anywhere you live in the Bay Area will work. Enjoy your time here!

Welcome.
Just be sure to bring lots of money.

My bud from college lives in burlingame, and in his neighborhood, the mean home price is well over $2million. (his home is north of $4 million, and he’s not even 40 yet!)

HAHAHAHA on the bolded part.

And to whomever mentioned Russian Hill - my old hood. I miss it. But love my 3,100 sq. ft. house here in TN where my mortgage costs about 1/3 of a month’s rental cost there.

What is she doing her fellowship in? Is she going to be at the parnassus campus all the time or spending time at Mt. zion, the VA, sfgh? I did all my training at UCSF: medschool, residency, and fellowship. I lived most of the time in the sunset during training but immediately moved to SOMA after training since the weather was so much better. Commute to UC is a bitch but you can take the MUNI in as well. I’d suggest living in a better weather area if you are weather sensitive. I still have PTSD from those years:)

Living over on arguello and lake gets you still the same weather patterns as the sunset, may be a little better. If your fellowship isn’t brutal, although most at UCSF are, I would live farther away from parnassus. That is my bias.

It’s derm at the Mt. Zion campus. We are from northern canada so we aren’t that sensitive to the weather considering I’m staring out the window at feet of snow.

gasman…? GI doc?

For training groups, check out purplepatch fitness. They generally have some swim, bike and run options that you can join for free to get your feet wet. Matt Dixon even leads some of the workouts.
