Need Advice: Shiv

I have a very nice shiv expert. While I was tightening up the screw on the seatpost with a torque wrench - with the right torque setting. It broke inside.

The bike was purchased online as a demo bike. I took it to one of the shops in the area (who work on specialized - calmar bicycles) and they could not remove it.

Any suggestions on what to do? Any good shop in San Jose area who could help? Any other suggestions on contacting the manufacturer?

I am in the bay area. Surprisingly; when I called specialized customer service - the person on the phone was extremely rude. The worst experience I had with a bike and customer service.

Try calling Mike’s Bikes in Los Gatos or Cognition in Mountain View.

.

Is it under warranty? If so, take it to a specialized dealer. They’ll call specialized, send them your frame, and specialized will most likely send you a new frame.

OK. Let’s assume that, for whatever reason, you are stuck with a frame with a broken bolt with no outside assistance.

Do you know about bolt extractors? In the UK and Australia they are called Easy-Outs. You drill a hole in the bolt and then insert this device and unscrew it.

Remember that there should be no tension on the bolt because you snapped off the head.

This is the last option open tto you and everybody else is going to tell you to go to your LBS, Specialized, etc.

Snapping the bolt IS NOT the same as the seat post fail you have been reading about. In fact, it is the opposite.

Same thing happened to mine a last month, I took it to Specialized and they dealt with it. They used a bolt extractor it took them a while but if the frame for any reason had any damage Specialized advise me that they will replace it., but for me was a big issue as I leave in China and you can’t get that frame over here.

There are a lot of torque wrench stories on this forum. I’m curious, did you set your torque wrench to the “max” setting?

There should be a warning on torque wrenches that essentially says “this wrench won’t replace sense” and “most bolts have their max listed, don’t start at max, start lower and see if you get slipping”.

Talk with Justin over at Mike’s Bikes Palo Alto. They deal with a lot of Shivs, and generally provide very good service.

Alternatively, almost any local machine shop should be able to do the extraction…bolts break off in machining fixtures all the time, so they have all the tricks.
