New Bike Question (2)

How many miles do you put on a road/tri bike before you justify getting a new one?

How many miles do you put on a road/tri bike before you*** justify*** getting a new one?
“Justify” is the key word here. Everybody’s different…some thousands, others less, etc. (N+1…)

I tend to look at my bike-related purchases in terms of cost per mile. I like to get my mikes into the $0.1/mile range before replacing them. Of course I can get rid of them sooner if I sell them for any meaningful money. So I generally hold onto my bikes for at least 4 years. The roady I just replaced I had for over 7.5 years.

So this is why I’ll likely never own a super bike.

You*** justify*** a new bike? Just buy what you want. Consumerism at its finest!

It depends on the bike. I have a 10 year old Litespeed Ultimate with over 50,000 miles on it. I have a 1 year old TCR Advanced with a little over 6,000 miles. I have toxic sweat syndrome - I melt paint off aluminum to that after 3 years or so, the paint is bubbling and falling off in chunks. This has happened on 3 different brands, so I’m staying away from aluminum.

I yearn for a classic Colnago Arabesque. But I’d just ruin it if I road it.

Boredom not miles is your limiter for a newer quality bike so afraid can’t give you a rule on replacement.

I would say tri gear tends to change a little faster than pure road or mtn bikes but I think that is less true today…

Total unreliable sample —7 years seems to be the replacement zone for a lot of my club mates admittedly more roadies. Probably half that timing on avg for active racers due to club discounts, interest in latest tech, and social factors.

It’s a bit analogous to asking about when to get a car;some like to change it up every yr or two and some buy and hold and care less about the latest tech.
