Swimming in Oakville, Ontario

Hey guys,
Im up in Oakville for a couple of months (Tim Horton’s Training Centre) for work and was looking at a few places to get some decent swims in. It seems to me that all the pools close by have pretty limited lane swim schedules, poked around a little and thought maybe I would just try and ask on here. Anyone from around there or have any input, any would help!

…I guess while I’m at it, any good places to ride and run? Thanks!

Public pools have pretty limited schedules as you have found out. There are a few gyms with pools including the YMCA of Oakville which is about 5 min drive (20 min walk) from you. I think it’s about $80/month for a pass but they offer more than just a pool.

LA Fitness is near-ish within about a 20 minute drive and some have pools (3011 Appleby Line, Burlington) with lane swimming from 5am to 11pm. It’s about $30/month but you have to pay the initial $100 registration fee.

Thanks a lot, I’ll definitely look into going to the Y… way better than the public pool option!

Welcome to the region! If you’re into trail running, you could do worse than explore Bronte Creek Provincial Park, the ‘west’ side, day-use area off Burloak. I gave a run-down (excuse the pun) of the great trails here, and even found the paved internal access lanes to be good for private, vehicle-free interval rides (~ 5km loops) if you slip under the gate prior to the 8am opening time

As a former Oakville Y member, just a caution, lane swim time can be limited too, and you can sometimes run into lane hogs - but that’s no different than just about anywhere.

You may miss it, but the outdoor pools open in June and have regular day time lane swim times (inlcuding lunch hour). Burlington has an outdoor 50m pool too (Nelson).

If you have a rental car the Milton Sports Centre is about a 20 minute drive, but its a great pool. Not sure about the Oakville pools, but the public lane swims at the mississauga pools are a disaster. As far as I can tell the fast lane is for the the 2 dozen or so people that can clock faster than a 3:00/100m. Milton I’ve rarely had to circle swim, and even then it was three to a lane. The fast lane is actually fast most of the time - especially when Kyle Jones was there! Water temp is nice a cool. Unfortunately probably similar time restrictions as other pools. Weekdays there are 3 lane swims usually about 1.5 hrs, morning, lunch, and evening. If you need a bike shop in the area check out Cyclepath Oakville - close to Tim’s head office. In terms of rides there is usually a big group that meets up at Munn’s church early on the weekends - map. Or also a lot of cyclists meet just up the road from there at a small parking lot on the southwest corner of Lower Base Line, and Sixth line - map. From there you can go as far as you want on quiet roads, flat or decent hills depending on what you want, definitely one of the best places to ride in the area. Not sure about runs in Oakville, but for trails the Halton conservation areas should be drying up soon. Hilton Falls and Rattlesnake are both great.

I swam at Iroquois Ridge Community Centre (1051 Glenashton Drive, Oakville, Ontario, L6H 5L1) and occasionally at White Oaks Community Pool (1330 Montclair Drive, Oakville, Ontario, L6H 1Z5)
Oakville has a number of community pools all managed under the same municipal umbrella.

The swim schedule is here: http://www.oakville.ca/assets/general%20-%20culture%20recreation/RecSwimScheduleSpring.pdf

There are plenty of lane swim times available each day.

Open Water Swimming will be possible starting late May - either at Kelso lake (East of Milton) or Gulliver’s Lake (north of Hamilton)

I missed that! One of the nicer runs (outside of trails already posted) is along Lakeshore Road. Sidewalks are in pretty good condition and some nice scenery along the lake. Kelso has some nice trails but might be a bit sloppy around the ski hill and Hilton Falls also has some nice trails. Again about a 30min drive from where you are.
