TE and 910xt

Does the calculation of TE on my 901xt care what I have as settings for different zones? Is it calculated by what I put in as max only? Or does it also need an accurate resting HR?
My max is about 180, so the top of Z2 would be 130, which is what I have set. If that’s true, and I run 1 hour at about 125-130, then I should end up with a TE of 2.0, right? But since my HR is higher for Z2 while running vs. riding, I’m wondering if setting the zones for each sport makes a difference in the calculation.

No one? The only thing I get from Garmin is that it “uses HR to determine TE using Firstbeat”. But no specifics on WHICH HR settings are used.

They are very murky about the whole thing.

You’ll find more information about training effect at firstbeat.com and in their software products.

The implementation in the 910 as far as I can tell:

  1. Uses running history to decide your athlete class. Biking or swimming don’t factor in.
  2. Only uses your max heart rate to determine the training effect.
  3. It will produce a score for biking, but as I said ti doesn’t factor into the athlete class
  4. The athlete class setting in garmin connect does nothing to the 910, it won’t change it in the watch.

One thing about training effect, running for an hour at zone 2 doesn’t necessarily produce a TE of 2, those zones and training effect only have a coincidental relationship, they are arrived at in different ways.

I would expect that it does.

What I find funny is that I can go out for a 5 hour bike ride, all in zone 2 and my TE will be 2.x. I can also do a 45 minute hard ride (like Revolver on TrainerRoad), and my TE will be 4.x. My experience is that TE is almost an approximation of your average HR for the workout and doesn’t much take duration into account.

I find if my HR creaps up into upper z4 or z5 (big hill or random spike) I’m instantly getting TE5, even on a slow recovery run. When 90% of my runs/rides say TE5, I decided to use TSS if I was really concerned with anything.
