Went to “Captain America - The Winter Solider” last night with my oldest daughter. Early in the movie there is a big action / car sequence…cars diving through traffic, bullets flying everywhere, hectic camera angles, etc. At one point, they pass a Metro bus and on the back is a billboard for Felt bicycles. At first I wasn’t certain, but was pretty sure I had seen the Felt “wings” emblem. Few seconds later there was another shot of it, and sure enough…Felt Bicycles.
Some nice mass population exposure, but I’m sure most people wouldn’t have noticed…
I think that Felt makes a specific push to place their products into movies. More than a few movies you see that Felts are the bikes are conveniently hanging on the apartment wall or being ridden, with the Felt name prominently displaced. I do not think this is a coincidence. I would not be surprised if they payed for the billboard, but bikes may be given for free to the studios so that they get shown on screen. Or maybe their geographic location close to hollywood means they are the first number people call when they need a bike.
Oh, I highly doubt it was free. Hell, I would be shocked if it was “incidental” exposure. I kinda doubt Felt is running ads on the sides of busses in D.C. Could be wrong, but it is not where I would invest my marketing $$ for a bike company.

For a long time now, product placement in movies has been pretty good $$ for the studios. Not much is incidental anymore.
Exactly…I’ve had enough of those requests over the years to know that a billboard ad on the side of a bus in a chase scene is not gonna be left to chance.
Some things you have no control over…i.e. shooting a scene in Times Square or something like that. But a billboard ad on a bus is completely under the control of the studio and they aren’t giving that way for free.
I was watching the show Blue Bloods the other night and a girl one of the officers was talking to was riding a Felt. They even mentioned the nice bike.

Or maybe someone at the studio/producer/director/stage/set design, etc… is a cyclist and a fan of our bikes.
You think Felt would spend cash on product placement in multi-million dollar movies?

I would hope that Felt would spend the money if the price is right. I would be pretty surprised if there was nothing for the ads on the bus in Captain America. No matter what the deal, Felt is definitely get their bikes and name in front of lots of people and I am guessing that they are doing it for a good price, maybe they are just known as the company that will get the production a bike quickly.
