Is it reasonable to expect that there would be absolutely no chain rub? Even when cross chained?

No. Even when accurately adjusted, cross-chaining at the boundaries will often produce a slight bit fd rubbing - this is normal.

Yes, if you’re running 10/11 sp. Maybe it’s possible with 8sp to get no chain rub, I never took good enough care of my 8sp drivetrain when I had it to know.

Yes, with Di2 and it’s auto trimming, you don’t get any rubbing.

yes, mechanical , at least 10 and 11 spd shimano can be set up with no rub in either bar end or sti configurations

No, with mechanical when cross chained. Especially with the short chainstays on bikes with 650’s.

Let’s rephrase… since we all know extreme cross-chaining should be avoided, why care if the FD rubs a little then? (consider it a small audio ‘alarm’ in case you weren’t paying attention to the cross-chain and can then shift to something better soon enough). As long as it doesn’t rub in any of the other 16-18 ‘good’ gear combos, no worries.

Timely post. I’ve been having a hell of a time setting up my Ultegra 11sp (mechanical) front derailleur. Part of my problem is that I’m getting some compression in the housing/barrel adjuster I’m currently using. I’m just surprised that I’m having such a hard time with this one. Anyone want to drop some knowledge??

Both my SRAM & Shimano 10spd front shifters have trim adjustments. So although I will get FD chain rub if I cross from one side of the cassette to the other, I can then trim it out.

you will get better results if you use teh inline barrel adjuster that comes with it. ie have it all teh way closed, pull deraileur cable as hard as possible and tighten bolt. then open up inline adjuster until you get your indexing working. this was from teh shop mecj and it worked for me. without doing that i could not get the ult 11spd to work worth a darn.
