I know this will tick off the watch snobs but

…suck it up. My brother just returned a few days ago from China on a business trip for the first time and while he was over there he bought a “Tag” watch. Actually its a replica and he claims its a damn good copy since he already has a real one. He only paid $200. for it. I don’t give a rat’s ass about high end watches and don’t need one to feel good about myself, but I’ve told him to pick me something up next time he goes to China. Whatever he brings home for me it’ll still be far nicer in appearance than my $30. Timex Iron Man even if it doesn’t keep as accurate time.

Interesting comment on this blog about Chinese watches.

Watches are another thing I don’t get outside of the “I have one as jewelry” mentality. I don’t wear one because there is no where I go where I don’t have the time with me. If nothing else I have my phone with me. You can’t drive down the road without seeing a “Time sign”. Furthermore I don’t like things on my fingers or wrists because I do stuff that may get my hands ripped off. I do wear a wedding ring, but only because it’s what you do when you get married  I’ve actually almost lost that finger because of it one one occasion. To much stuff to catch “Jewelry” on to be worth for me.

i’ve always seen watches as the way the uber-rich measure their johnson. open up a wall street and you’ll always find watch and shoe ad’s. who in the hell needs a watch that cost $5000+++? who the hell needs a bike that cost $5000+++? one dude has $5mil, the other has $7, but that dude has a patek.

I knew two brothers several years back. One guy had a lot of money invested in a Leica camera set up but wore a cheap Timex watch. The other guy had big bucks into a couple of Rolex watches but used a cheap point and shoot camera. Each guy thought his brother was dumber than a bag of nails.

It’s okay if you don’t appreciate the work/time/effort that goes into a hand-crafted product. But hey, the children making products in China, need food too.

This is what we do as humans for the most part. If you have the money I’ve got nothing against it if that is your thing. But at least be honest and not try to tell me you NEED a watch to tell time

I just have a hard time with all of it. I’m a utilitarian at heart and even somewhat of a minimalist so stuff like that just isn’t my thing. Even if I had the money I suspect I would not spend it on those types of items. Maybe I would, maybe money would change me.

Sometimes people just like nice things. It doesn’t have to be about measuring john sons, or competing with the other guy, or showing off. It’s just about appreciating high quality. You don’t have to have a ridiculously blinded out diamond watch the size of a baby’s head to be in the expensive watch market. Plenty of the nicest watches are understated. It’s the materials and craftsmanship(and to some extent, name) that make them exclusive.

There are plenty of people who can make a nice picture through CGI. That doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the value of high quality photography.

There are tons of loaves of perfectly decent bread on the supermarket shelves, but that doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a high quality baker.

He overpaid. I have a box full of Chinese ‘replicas’.
All are indistinguishable from the real thing and each cost less than $15 USD

The thing that gets me about all this watch stuff is that you can buy a classic mechanical Hamilton watch off ebay for several hundred dollars. It won’t project an image of gilded wealth, but it keeps time nicely and represents probably the zenith of American watch making, back when they practical tools for busy people. I infrequently wear a watch anymore but there are a lot of options ranging between paying $5k for a timepiece or paying $200 for a good replica. It seems they both lack taste.

I’ve owned a few nice watches in my day but nothing crazy expensive. Bottom line their are some lower cost offerings (not knockoffs) that bring a lot of value to the table but the old saying you get what you pay for applies to the watch world. If you’re not familiar with the real deal it might impress you, but hold them both in your hand and the shortcomings become obvious.

In China you can buy a BMW X5 knock off, but that doesn’t mean it’s anywhere near the real thing.

I have a handful of friends that wear really expensive watches, they are the “$30k millionaires” of the group; driving a German car with $5k on their wrist, while living with mom and up to their eyebealls in debt. Everybody has their vices I guess, man jewelry is one I definitely do not get.

I think this is why some people are different. I generally have no use for “Nice things” for the sole reason of “Being nice”. If it works better, lasts longer, etc etc sure I’ll get the “Nicer thing” but just to have “Something nice”, just doesn’t do it for me. If I wanted a watch and I had all the money in the world available to me I would want the “Best bang for the buck”. It’s just how I am. The idea of paying 10K for a watch that will last forever but is “Nicer” then a $200 watch that will last forever but isn’t so nice simply doesn’t make sense to me.

Good quality bread tastes better and has other qualities that are better. I get that. I would not buy a “High quality bread” over a “Grocery store bread” just because it looked nicer as “Looks” is not the function a loaf of bread is supposed to fulfill.

To make matters worse I think some people actually buy “Nice looking” products, pay more for them and they actually function worse then a much cheaper version.

How much was your bike?

My cruiser was $50.
My P2 was $1200
My RS was $1200

All three together cost less that a Leica.

“We have this same thread about every other month.”

As regular as a chinese knock-off watch!

Nice. I’ve got a P2 and an S1. While we may agree that these are pretty sensible bikes, I’m sure that in the off topic section of a photography forum Buffy and aca_broj_2 would calling us dumber than a bag of nails since they have a $150 walmart special that’s ‘just as good’.

Well, as someone who knows about bikes AND cameras, I know that a walmart bike isn’t “just as good” and neither is a walmart camera. But a Nikon system with good glass is just as good as Leica (I’ve tested it). And in the Leica price range there are better options by going to larger format (Mamiya 7 for example, which is actually cheaper).

Leica a makes a fantastic piece of equipment. The price point just doesn’t make sense, unless you buy used, take care of it, then resell.
