i love this picture. its necessary for many reasons.
that fact that we still have podium girls seems so archaic in our modern, pc world. i really am surprised.
… what to make of the publicity for this year’s E3 Harelbeke with its tagline, “Who squeezes them in Harelbeke?” They have previous for this kind of thing, featuring women’s naked, objectified bodies in 2011 and 2014.
This year’s campaign plays on the infamous moment when Peter Sagan decided to grope podium girl Maja Leye’s bottom as she planted the obligatory winner’s kiss on Fabian Cancellara’s cheek at the Tour of Flanders in 2013. He later presented her with flowers, because flowers make everything alright after a sexual assault, don’t they?
Of course the PR team behind the E3 Harelbeke campaign are worth their weight in gold. They don’t just court controversy, they take it all the way down the aisle. They’re like a bunch of little boys giggling at a glimpse of boob or arse, virtually masturbating over the idea of their campaigns going viral.
hahahahah … thank you! these kind of responses are even better.
1 - “grope”? did Sagan actually touch her or was he just goofing for the camera?
2 - “she planted the obligatory winner’s kiss” - either way, they write this. this is the archiac thing i can’t believe we still do. are there podium dudes at the womyn’s races?
3 - “sexual assault” … um, that’s a bit much.
lastly …
4 - “They’re like a bunch of little boys giggling at a glimpse of boob or arse, virtually masturbating over the idea of their campaigns going viral” … wow, they don’t get it. the fact that the campaign goes viral means the PR guys are right.

I’m sure there are non-UCI/USAC sanctioned ones that do ; because it’s fun

Don’t quite get what you are trying to say. are you saying that groping is okay because having podium girls is itself objectifying; so in for nickel, in for dime?

it was two thoughts.
the first was a response to a previous poster who asked if the photo was ‘necessary’. my $0.02 was ‘yes’. I’ll elaborate below.
as far as ‘groping’, did Sagan actually touch her? I didn’t think he made contact; just acted ridiculous and simulated touching her.
and the final message was that i was ok with his ridiculousness, cause having podium girls is ridiculous anyway.

I read his point as “If we didn’t still have podium girls, this wouldn’t have even happened”
I blame the creepy old Belgian dudes who say “Vee haff to haff zee pozeeum gurlhz!!! Zhat iss vaht zee Schprieeng Glashics are allz aboot”

And your point is? Even assuming there was no contact, it would still meet the legal definition of assault (as in intent). Making contact would turn it into battery. I’m not sure what you are saying is exculpatory.
and the final message was that i was ok with his ridiculousness, cause having podium girls is ridiculous anyway.
That’s a rather disingenuous reductio ad absurdum argument.** **Something is ridiculous, and instead of doing something constructive, you think upping the ante is the way to resolve the ridiculousness. Makes perfect sense.
Well Sagan did originally touch the podium miss’ butt, both of them said so in interviews about the event. And the legal definition of assault won’t be the same in the US vs Belgium. Americans are way, way, waaaaaay more sensitive about that.
Just saw that Omloop and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne this weekend will be on Cycling.tv . So while you need to pay for it I’ve found it worth it, no dealing with crappy websites that drop connection and all that sort of stuff. It’s like $20 for 3 months so not a bad deal.

Fair warning…it is difficult to cancel your subscription with them (or at least it was in the past). I used the service years ago and was constantly hit up to pay extra for the races that you really wanted to see.
Kept trying to cancel and kept getting renewed. A bunch of us over at the old VN board had the same issue. Was a major hassle.
Things may have changed since then, but I would enter any dealings with them with great caution.
