His restraint was unacceptable. He finished way too low on the legs, and should have controlled the hips at least once the kid was down. He had a high single and didn’t do much with it.
No wonder he was suspended.

Nope. Lawyers and irrationally irate parents are why our educational system is failing. There’s a policy in place restricting teachers from physically interacting/ restraining students. Lawyers make those recommendations, Board Member approve them, and parents want them. Administration has their hands tied if the admin themselves wish to keep their jobs. Basically, education is ruined when people who know nothing about education are allowed to make education decisions.

The suspension was protocol. Her asinine public statement assigning blame to the teacher prior to the actual investigation was certainly not. If I were a teacher or student I’d want my Super’s prejudices to lean towards having the back of the people in actual classroom, not trying to please the lawyers and boardmembers.

I doubt that protocol includes having the superintendent making proclamations about what she sees in a video before a proper investigation is completed. Until we realize that Superintendent positions are a political thing, maybe even more so, than an educational thing. Your quote above reeks of political gibberish. “It was alarming”. Damn straight. A person came into a classroom and tried to sell drugs. That’s alarming. A skirmish developed between a teacher and said student. Also alarming. The teacher knew the school’s policy on restraining a student and still decided to act. Again, alarming. A bunch of students standing around taking video instead of helping the teacher. Bingo- alarming.
The situation is in the news and viral. The Super is required to make a statement that addresses the issue but says absolutely nothing. She’s got to hide behind policy and is not allowed to publicly show support for a staff member who is under investigation for fear of biasness in an independent investigation. The Super is not at all allowed to say, “I saw the video and I was rooting for the teacher for a pin. It’s a darn shame that the kid didn’t hit his head on the wall.” That’s what she’s thinking and what we’re all wanting. So, the Super decided to make a statement hiding behind school policy and gets accused of tossing the teacher under the bus. In the meantime, school policy which says that the teacher is to be placed on paid leave.
The article from Haim’s post points this out. They are calling for the Super to lose her job. Yet another case of someone (maybe) getting forced out of their job for no real reason other than doing their job.

The story says the coach attempted the takedown after being hit in the face. In which case it sounds like a pretty simple case of self defense, and I think it wouldn’t require much political risk on the part of the superintendent to at least take a neutral position.

The problem is that her statement condemned the teachers actions as “unacceptable” before an investigation has determined whether or not his actions were justifiable and within the district rules. She is responsible to many different constituents (parents, students, teachers, etc.), and her statement is not serving any of them at any level. An appropriate and professional response would read something like: “We are investigating the incident, and it is inappropriate for me to comment further at this stage. Per district policy, Mr. Black has been placed on temporary leave pending the outcome of that investigation.”

I’m not saying anything in your post is wrong. In fact, I’d vote for you as Superintendent any time.
However, it really is a shame that a student tries to sell drugs in a classroom while class is going on and attacks a teacher and, therefore, we get all up and up about a statement made by the Super. On the list of problems in this incident, this specific one seems way low on the list of concerns. The Super’s statement is the second to last thing in this whole story that strikes me as unacceptable, just above the teacher’s behavior. Let’s not get distracted by the fact that a student tried doing/ selling drugs in school and attacked a teacher whilst a bunch of people stood around and did nothing more than take video.

The backlash forced her to acknowledge that her remarks about Black caused “great anger,” and she even apologized to the Santa Monica community.

In retrospect, I understand how my statement has created these concerns.”
