Currently own a 2007 cervelo P2SL as well as a 2013 QR Lucero Lite. I’ve got the fit on both dialed in to nearly the exact same position, so let’s assume that there’s no difference in ‘fit’ between the two. I’ve decided that a) i don’t need two tri bikes b) I want race wheels and c) my budget to spend more money on tri toys is next to nil. So my options are:
- sell the P2SL which maybe i could get $500-$600 for. And use that to invest (hopefully) in an old used aero wheel up front (maybe something like an older reynolds, much older hed/zipp, etc in the 50-60mm range) and a cheap-o trainer wheel in the back with a disc cover to put on my lucero lite. I’ve got patience so while i realize it might take me a while to come up with a ‘compelling’ set of wheels for that price i think it can be done.
Or
- sell the lucero lite (which maybe i could get closer to $1600-1750 or more for) and put that into a newer set of used 404 firecrests (could do disc cover in back as well) or a newer version of used HEDs or something else along those lines to go on my P2SL.
What to do? Am I better off with a (presumably) faster frame and ‘slower’ wheels or a better set of race wheels on a MUCH older frame. Any thoughts? If it helps, my A race this year is IM Mont Tremblant and am not super fast targeting a bike split somewhere between 5:45 and 6 hours (will see where training and this miserable winter weather get me). Thoughts?
